KU Football Shows Positive Signs in Loss

When you’re an NCAA D-1 program, finding bright spots in losses doesn’t get you anywhere, but for the Kansas Jayhawks, a 30-20 loss in which KU had a chance to potentially win the game late is something to focus on moving forward.

Freshman QB Ryan Willis–named national freshman of the week–started his first game at the helm for KU and played extremely well for head coach David Beaty and the Jayhawks.

Willis showed off a great arm and solid accuracy throughout the majority of the game, but as many freshman do, appeared to suffer a case of nerves late in the game with a chance to drive down the field and take the lead, eventually throwing a game-sealing interception for Texas Tech.

Offensively, Kansas looked as good as it has looked at any point this season. Texas Tech has proven to be one of the more high-powered offenses in the Big 12 for many years, and the Jayhawk defense was up to the task for nearly the entirety of the game.

This season, it’s going to be the little things for the Jayhawks, which are likely headed for 0-12–although Kansas State hasn’t looked anywhere near the level of the past.

At some point, however, Kansas fans and alumni (donors) are going to need to see something to believe in with the program.

Looking around not only the Big 12, but the nation as a whole, the Jayhawks simply don’t have the type of stadium to make a profound impression on recruits and potential future stars.

When watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings play this past Sunday, you are able to see the type of facility the Minnesota Golden Gophers have, as the Vikings are calling it their home while their new stadium is being built.

There is no reason why Minnesota and Kansas can’t have similar stadiums, but the contrast between the two is nothing less than striking.

Despite a football program struggling, the Kansas Athletic Department is still among the nations most financially gaining, and donors are ready and willing to help the program get to where it needs to get in order to compete on a national level again.

How they do it and what decisions they decide to make with Memorial Stadium are unknown, but what is becoming increasingly obvious is the need for a massive makeover in Lawrence.

For now, witnessing David Beaty and his coaching staff make positive strides with the team is the best fans can hope for, and with Willis and running back Ke’uan Kinner, the Jayhawks have young, exciting talent.
