Lawrence, Kansas is the place to be for sports as we close out 2015 and look toward 2016.

The Kansas Men’s Basketball team is ranked No. 2 nationally and appears to be one of the favorites to reach the Final Four.

The Kansas Women’s Basketball team is enjoying a winning record at 5-3, and the Kansas Volleyball team is headed to its first ever Final Four after taking down top-seeded USC in 5 sets over the weekend.

KU Athletics has always maintained a high level of success, but with successful soccer, softball, and baseball programs over the past several seasons to go along with the basketball program, sports across the board are becoming a major draw for prospective students looking for an atmosphere which includes good sports teams.

The only thing missing from the list is a successful on-field football program. It wasn’t all that long ago that Kansas Football held its own in the national landscape of big-time football, but following multiple bowl wins and a dismissal of former head coach Mark Mangino, the program took several steps back with the hiring of Turner Gill and then Charlie Weis.

Now, David Beaty has taken over the program, and although the team finished the season 0-12, the progress was visible. Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger will give Beaty at least three years before making any type of judgement or decision on what direction the program is headed, mainly because Beaty deserves the chance bring in his own players and work through a decimated roster following the firing of Weis and the dismissal of several players.

If KU football can get back to the its winning ways of the last few years of the Mangino era, not only would the athletic department benefit financially, but the attraction to prospective student athletes would grow tremendously.

For now, the success of the men’s basketball program, as well as the magical run of the volleyball team to the Final Four will keep KU sports atop the list of successful teams at the collegiate level.
