The Kansas basketball schedule hasn’t yet been released, but one of the year’s biggest matchups has been. The Big 12 and SEC conferences officially announced Tuesday, along with the rest of the matchups for the Big 12/SEC Challenge, that Kansas will play Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., at the Rupp Arena along with the rest of the matchups for the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The game will be played Jan. 28.

Kansas and Kentucky play for the fourth time in the last three years, and it has been a storied rivalry between two of the top schools in the nation. Last year, Kansas defeated Kentucky in an overtime thriller at Allen Fieldhouse. The year before, however, Kentucky demolished Kansas by 40 points early in the season in the Champions Classic.

Kansas basketball fans can look forward to what has become a regular matchup to continue for another year. The battle between Kansas and Kentucky has a huge influence on recruiting for both of these schools and the head-to-head element of the fight for top recruits makes this matchup even more interesting.

Among the other games comprised in the Big 12/SEC challenge are Kansas State vs. Tennessee and Texas A&M vs. West Virginia. West Virginia was a surprise as one of the best teams in the Big 12 last season and battled Oklahoma and Kansas for the Big 12 regular season title. Missouri is not included in this year’s Challenge.

The Big 12 holds a lopsided lead over the SEC in this challenge with a 20-10 record over the last three seasons. I would expect that trend to continue as the SEC doesn’t look to have a lot of great talent this season. With Ben Simmons gone from LSU, Kentucky holds a lot more SEC supremacy.
